The accession consists of two videosette tapes comprising a video recording of a colloquium entitled, "The Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents: The Hottest Thing in Oceanography," held at Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego on October 21, 1981 as part of a program of events in honor of the inauguration of UCSD Chancellor Richard Atkinson. The colloquium included scientists of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography who presented illustrated lectures documenting marine life and unusual geological formations discovered at hydrothermal vents in the deep sea. The colloquium was chaired by Scripps Institution of Oceanographpy Director William A. Nierenberg and included lectures by Harmon Craig, Robert R. Hessler, George N. Somero and Fred Noel Spiess.
